Security & Strategic Affairs

The US-Pakistan defense relationship, counterterrorism cooperation, mediation diplomacy, and the China relationship as it bears on Pakistan specifically.

Faisal Mosque and the Margalla Hills in Islamabad
Overview

Security is where the US-Pakistan relationship is most often misread. This program studies the relationship on its own terms, tracking defense cooperation, shared counterterrorism interests, Pakistan's role as an intermediary, and its ties with China, without treating any of them as a proxy for something else.

Focus areas

  • The US-Pakistan defense and security relationship
  • Counterterrorism cooperation
  • Mediation diplomacy
  • The China relationship as it bears on Pakistan

Key questions

  • What does a durable defense relationship look like when the original shared mission has changed?
  • Where do counterterrorism interests still converge, and where do they diverge?
  • How should Washington read Pakistan's ties with Beijing without treating them as zero-sum?
